Black History Month - People looking up with hope

As we conclude “My Tribute To The Black History Giants” series, we look at a group of pioneers whose contributions often are woven into the very fabric of our daily lives, even if we don’t realize it.

This week, I am standing on the shoulders of the Modern Pioneers—the scientists, mathematicians, and engineers that broke the “digital ceiling.” They showed the Black experience is not just one of struggle, but one of immense, world-changing brilliance.

The Architects of the Future

While others were fighting for space on the ground, these giants were making sure we had a place in the stars and in the future of technology.

Katherine Johnson: A “human computer” whose calculations were essential to the success of NASA’s first space flights. She didn’t just break barriers of race and gender; she calculated the trajectory for humanity to leave the planet.

Dr. Shirley Jackson: A theoretical physicist and the first Black woman to earn a Ph.D. from MIT. Her groundbreaking research paved the way for inventions we use every single second: the portable fax, touch-tone telephones, solar cells, and the fiber optic cables that make the internet possible.

Gladys West (May her soul rest in peace): If you’ve ever used GPS to find your way, you have Gladys West to thank. Her mathematical modeling of the earth’s shape became the foundation for the Global Positioning System. She worked in silence for decades before her contributions finally were recognized.

Why Their Shoulders Matter to Me

I stand on their shoulders every time I use a smartphone, hop on a Zoom call, or dream of a career in a technical field. These pioneers remind me that our intelligence is a frontier.

They taught me that “representation” isn’t just about being in the room; it’s about the quality of work we bring to the table. They remind us that Black History also is the history of science, the history of the internet, and the history of the future.

A Final Reflection on this Series

Over the last four weeks, we’ve looked at the Lawyers, the Truth-Tellers, the Organizers, and the Scientists. Each group built a different part of the platform we stand on today.

As the Black History Month is coming to a close, remember, the “shoulders” we stand on are both sturdy and a call to action. We are the “Giants” for the next generation.

How will you use your brilliance to pave the way for someone else? Let’s keep building, keep dreaming, and keep reaching.

May God help us and shower us all with both His blessings and the things that make life sweet.
