On The Power Of Narrative And Owning Our Stories

Last week, we honored the Legal Minds that built the framework for justice. But laws change only when hearts and minds are ready to receive them. This week, for Part 2 of “My Tribute To The Black History Giants” series, I am standing on the shoulders of the Truth-Tellers.
These giants were the journalists, novelists, and poets that refused to let the Black experience be hidden in the shadows. They understood that whoever controls the story controls the future.
The Voices That Shifted the World
I often wonder where we would be if these giants hadn’t been brave enough to pick up a pen. They didn’t just report the news; they captured the human spirit.
Ida B. Wells: A giant of investigative journalism. At a time when speaking out meant a literal death sentence, she used her printing press to expose the truth about lynching in the South. She taught me that data and facts are a form of resistance.
James Baldwin: Baldwin was a master of the mirror. He compelled the world to look at its own prejudices with a precision that was both painful and poetic. He taught me that “nothing can be changed until it is faced.”
Maya Angelou: She took the heavy, jagged pieces of her life and polished them into diamonds. Through her memoirs and poetry, she gave us a language for our resilience. She taught me that even when “the caged bird sings,” the whole world can hear its call for freedom.
Why Their Shoulders Matter to Me
I stand on their shoulders every time I share my story with the universe at chrisokeynnokwam.com/books/. In a world that often tries to define us through stereotypes and statistics, the Truth-Tellers gave us the power of self-definition.
They showed our narratives are our property. Because they spoke their truth when it was dangerous to mention, I can speak my truth today with a sense of pride and purpose. They turned our “silent suffering” into a “loud legacy.”
A Reflection for You
The Truth-Tellers remind us that silence is a choice, but so is storytelling. Your perspective is a contribution to history.
What story are you telling with your life? If you had the world’s attention for just sixty seconds, what truth would you feel compelled to share?
May God help us and shower us all with both His blessings and the things that make life sweet.
